Choosing the Type of Leash That Will Work Best for Your Dog

If you have a dog you have to own a leash, it is just one of those necessities that every dog owner has. A leash will help you train your dog and keep them close to you while you are on walks throughout your neighborhood. Depending on the size of your dog and your dog's ability to listen to your commands there are and variety of different types of leashes you might consider purchasing.

One of the strongest types of leashes is one composed of steel cable; these are usually used for tying your dog out in the backyard. These steel leashes are covered with plastic and would be very difficult for a dog to chew through. Because these steel cable leashes come in a variety of thicknesses they were great for small dogs or large ones.

If you enjoy going on long walks in the country you may find a retractable leash is the best type of leash for you and your dog. These leashes can vary themselves in length from 2 feet to 20 feet simply by pressing a button. A retractable leash is great when you're in the country and can let your dog run about but then pull them close if you see a vehicle coming near. A retractable leash does not work very well in big cities because if you let the dog get 20 feet away from you they are likely to get tangled up with other pedestrians on the sidewalk.

For people who live in the country and just want to do keep their dog from running away they can try lunge lines. A lunge line is simply a leash made of cotton, leather, or steal. The lunge line is connected to a swivel and springs and is an inexpensive way to control the distance your dog travels from home. These lines can be made up to 30 or 40 feet long.

A nylon leash is typically used for dog owners that want to keep their pet close to them while on their walks. This type of leash comes in a variety of colors and can easily be found in a style that will match your dog's personality. Nylon leashes are durable, washable, and very inexpensive.

Other types of short leashes are also available in leather. A leather leash is comfortable for the owner and durable for the dog. Be careful if you get a leather leash for your puppy though because puppies love to chew on leather, and with enough time will easily chew through a leather leash.

Choosing the right leash for your dog can be a fun experience for both you and your pet. Test out a few different types of leashes to decide which one will work best for you. Not every leash will be right for every dog so it is important to give your dog a chance to test a few different kinds of leashes before sticking to one particular type.
